Nach dem Studium der Psychologie an der Universität Bonn, ihrer Promotion an der University of Michigan (2013), einer anschließenden Juniorprofessur für Empirische Bildungsforschung in den Bonner Bildungswissenschaften sowie einer Professur für „Empirische Bildungsforschung mit dem Schwerpunkt Bildungsverläufe und Determinanten von Unterrichtsqualität“ am IFS Dortmund (2019–2023) kehrte Fani Lauermann, PhD an die Universität Bonn zurück und hat am Bonner Zentrum für Lehrerbildung seit dem 01.04.2023 die Professur für „Empirische Bildungsforschung und Pädagogische Psychologie“ inne.
