The project Transformation of the Secondary School System and Academic Careers (TOSCAneo) investigates students’ initial learning conditions, pathways, and development throughout the upper secondary level (Oberstufe) in Baden-Württemberg. To this end, a longitudinal and representative survey is being conducted among students from around 90 vocational grammar schools (berufliche Gymnasien) and 30 general grammar schools (allgemeinbildende Gymnasien). The study currently comprises three measurement points (at the beginning, middle, and end of the 2023/2024 school year), with an additional wave planned at the end of upper secondary education (Sekundarstufe II). As part of the study, students participate in performance tests—for example, in mathematics and the natural sciences—and complete questionnaires on their motivation, interests, and individual prerequisites. In addition, surveys are conducted among parents or guardians, teachers, and school principals. The results of the study will provide differentiated insights into students’ learning conditions and developmental processes in upper secondary education across various pathways to higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulreife).
