As part of the joint research project DIVE-DL, a Deeper Learning (DL) teaching unit for German language education is being developed and evaluated for its effectiveness. The aim of the teaching unit is to enable students in lower secondary education (grades 9/10) to experience, reflect on, and appreciate diversity and identity as central themes. The unit also focuses on promoting both subject-specific learning (e.g., literary-aesthetic competencies, perspective-taking) and cross-disciplinary learning (e.g., empathy, understanding of democracy, recognition, and diversity). The project combines quantitative effectiveness research with qualitative methods within a design-based research framework. In an initial co-design phase, researchers, state institutes, and teachers collaborate closely to develop a DL manual. This manual includes concrete instructional guidelines for implementing the teaching unit on “Diversity & Identity”, as well as teaching materials and additional background information. The effects of the DL teaching unit are comprehensively examined in a randomized field trial. The findings will be sustainably transferred into educational practice in close cooperation with practitioners through digital platforms (e.g., NELE) and a community-of-practice network.
